This is an eight hour course divided into three lessons. The course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe and efficient use of a handgun for personal defense and the protection of family. Additional lectures provide information on the legal use of force for self defense and defense of other law-abiding individuals.
Prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding citizens 18 years of age or older, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local laws. Class participants must be experienced shooters that are able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, loading, unloading, cleaning, zeroing, and hitting the zero of their targets.
- Additional requirements: Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the required knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing a Special Services Group North America (SSC) firearms training course certificate, an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, or a military DD 214 with pistol qualification printed on it. Individuals holding a concealed weapons permit or a showing a certificate of training from another firearms training school must attend a pre-qualification course of fire; at their own expense, supervised by an authorized SSC instructor.
Lesson I consist of firearms handling, marksmanship, safety and defensive skills and strategies. Lesson II of this course consists of firearms and the various laws that affect their possession, carry and use; and the Legal Aspects of Self-Defense. During Lesson III, students will go to the gun range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.
Your course instructor will be SSG President, Ricardo Rosario; a national and state certified firearms instructor, and former state and federal law enforcement officer with 22 years of combined field operations and teaching experience in law enforcement operations and tactics, firearms training, self defense and unarmed combat, and related federal and state statutes.
