According to the FBI 2014 Uniform Crime Report, a violent crime occurs in the United States every 26 seconds, an aggravated assault every 42 seconds, a rape every 4.5 seconds, and a burglary every 18 seconds.  While the FBI reports that violent crimes reported to law enforcement have declined by 0.2% and property crimes declined by 4.3% from 2013 figures, the amount of violent crimes and property crimes is staggering.  See 2014 FBI Crime Statistics, the 2010 – 2014 Offense Analysis here and the FBI’s 2014 Time Clock Statistics.
